This paper gives a brief survey of the development of general relativity theory starting from Newtonian theory and Euclidean geometry and proceeding through to special relativity and finally to general relativity and relativistic cosmology.

Who’s afraid of coordinate systems? An essay on representation of spacetime structure
Coordinate-based approaches to physical theories remain standard in mainstream physics but are largely eschewed in foundational discussion in favour of coordinate-free differential-geometric approaches. I defend the conceptual and mathematical legitimacy of the coordinate-based approach for foundational work. In doing so, I provide an account of the Kleinian conception of geometry as a theory o...
متن کاملBulk Viscous Bianchi Type VI0 Cosmological Model in the Self-creation Theory of Gravitation and in the General Theory of Relativity
In the second self-creation theory of gravitation and in the general theory of relativity, Bianchi type VI0 cosmological model in the presence of viscous fluid is studied. An exact solution of the field equations is given by considering the cosmological model yields a constant decelerations parameter q=constant and the coefficients of the metric are taken as A(t)=[c1t+c<su...
متن کاملQuantum Gravity: General Introduction and Recent Develop- ments
I briefly review the current status of quantum gravity. After giving some general motivations for the need of such a theory, I discuss the main approaches in quantizing general relativity: Covariant approaches (perturbation theory, effective theory, and path integrals) and canonical approaches (quantum geometrodynamics, loop quantum gravity). I then address quantum gravitational aspects of stri...
متن کاملExtended Geometry of Black Holes
We reconsider space-time singularities in classical Einsteinian general relativity: with the help of several new co-ordinate systems we show that the Schwarzschild solution can be extended beyond the curvature singularity at r = 0. The extension appears as an infinite covering of standard Kruskal space-time. While the twodimensional reduction of this infinite sequence of Kruskal-Szekeres domain...
متن کاملOn totally umbilic submanifolds of semi-Riemannian manifolds
The notion of being totally umbilic is considered for non-degenerate and degenerate submanifolds of semi-Riemanian manifolds. After some remarks on the general case, timelike and lightlike totally umbilic submanifolds of Lorentzian manifolds are discussed, along with their physical interpretation in view of general relativity. In particular, the mathematical notion of totally umbilic submanifol...
